A musical adaptation of Ken Ludwig’s Olivier and Tony Award-winning play Lend Me A Tenor, first seen at the Utah Shakespearean Festival in 2007, could be heading for the West End towards the end of 2010.
With book and lyrics by Peter Sham, music by Brad Carroll and Ian Talbot reportedly directing, the farce revolves around renowned tenor Tito Merelli, known as "Il Stupendo", as he prepares to perform his greatest role, Otello. Things go wrong at the final dress rehearsal though, as a case of mistaken identity, double entendres and innuendoes threaten to ruin the show.
The West End-aimed Lend Me a Tenor – The Musical, inspired by Ken Ludwig's 1986 screwball comedy, began on Sept. 24th in Plymouth, Devon, with Matthew Kelly as opera manager Saunders, Damian Humbley as his assistant Max, Kelly Chinery as Max's girlfriend Maggie, Michael Matus as star tenor Tito, Sally Ann Triplett as Tito's fiery wife Maria and Sophie-Louise Dann as diva Diana.
The company of 27, under the direction of Ian Talbot, also includes CJ Johnson, Shirley Jameson, Jane Quinn, Harry Morrison, Lee Ormsby, John Stacey and Kerry Washington.
Peter Sham (book and lyrics) and Brad Carroll (music) penned the musical comedy that plays through to October 5th 2010 at the Theatre Royal Plymouth.
