About An Ideal Husband

Oscar Wilde's 1895 play An Ideal Husband centres on government minister Sir Robert Chiltern, who has a successful career and a loving wife, the idealistic Lady Chiltern.

But all this is threatened by the arrival of the mysterious Mrs Cheveley with damning evidence of a past misdeed.

Seeking help, Sir Robert turns to his friend Lord Goring, an apparently idle philanderer, who himself has a history with Mrs Cheveley.

Can this dandified philosopher save his friend from ruin? And will Lady Chiltern be able to reconcile the man she loves with her expectations of An Ideal Husband?

In the next 48 hours, all their lives will be turned upside down.

Lindsay Posner directs this revival of An Ideal Husband as a witty and stylish critique of social morality.

Wilde’s witty and stylish 1895 play was last produced in London by Peter Hall in 1996.
